Dubai’s technological landscape is poised for a significant upgrade following a major joint venture announcement. The Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ) has partnered with VOLT UAE to develop a massive, AI-ready data centre within Dubai Silicon Oasis. Unveiled on April 24, 2026, the project is supported by Schneider Electric and aims to fortify the emirate’s standing as a premier global hub for the digital economy.
A Strategic Leap for Digital Infrastructure
The collaboration brings together public sector planning and private sector expertise. VOLT UAE, the regional platform of Dutch developer VOLT, will lead the construction and operation of the facility. The development is designed to meet the soaring global demand for advanced computing power, specifically catering to artificial intelligence applications.
Spanning a substantial 60,000 square meters, the complex will be developed in two distinct phases to ensure rapid deployment while scaling for future needs:
- Phase One: An initial capacity of 29 megawatts (MW) will be made readily available to address immediate market demand.
- Phase Two: An additional 100 MW of committed power will follow, solidifying the site’s capability to handle large-scale AI workloads.
Engineering the “AI Factory”
Industry leaders are labeling this initiative as more than a traditional storage facility. Han de Groot, CEO of VOLT, described the project as a potential “AI factory”—a facility where energy is converted directly into intelligence. This concept addresses the critical need for “sovereign AI,” allowing organizations to develop and deploy AI securely within the region.
“The compute aspect is becoming a critical production factor for economies,” de Groot noted during the announcement. He emphasized that the infrastructure is engineered for exceptional resilience, ensuring continuous availability even under the most demanding operational conditions.
Aligning with Dubai’s Economic Vision
The venture aligns closely with the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which seeks to consolidate the emirate’s position as a global economic leader. His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Executive Chairman of DIEZ, highlighted the project’s timing amid rapid global shifts.
“This strategic partnership reaffirms the resilience of Dubai’s economic model,” Al Zarooni said. He connected the data centre to the recently launched AED11 billion ‘District IO’ project, noting that the integrated ecosystem at Dubai Silicon Oasis provides the necessary groundwork for future technologies and R&D.
Sustainability and Technical Support
A project of this magnitude requires robust power management. Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation, has been named the preferred technology partner. They will provide end-to-end infrastructure solutions, ranging from power distribution to advanced cooling systems.
Amel Chadli, President of the Gulf Cluster at Schneider Electric, called the initiative a “defining moment” for the UAE. By leveraging smart infrastructure, the facility aims to set a new benchmark for sustainability in high-density computing environments.
Looking Ahead
As the facility rises within the innovation-focused environment of Dubai Silicon Oasis, it promises to attract high-quality investments and foster a new wave of digital growth. For businesses and investors, the message is clear: Dubai is aggressively future-proofing its infrastructure to lead the next generation of the AI-driven economy.
