Dubai Culture Opens Creative Studio Residency in Historic Al Shindagha Neighbourhood

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has launched an open call for a new residency program, the Creative Studio Residency, set within the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood. The initiative invites creatives, collectives, and cultural founders to apply for dedicated workspace in one of the emirate’s most heritage-rich districts. Applications open July 20 through July 27, 2026, with submissions to be sent via email. The program aims to support artistic research, experimentation, and production while activating a historic site as a living cultural platform.

What the Residency Offers

Supported by the Sikka Platform, the residency provides multi-purpose studio spaces for practitioners across visual arts, design, architecture, creative technology, and other cultural industries. Residents are expected to develop a public-facing program—such as open lectures, talks, or exhibitions—that fosters talent development and community engagement. The program positions itself as both a production hub and a learning environment, turning the historic neighbourhood into a dynamic creative workshop.

The location itself is a key differentiator. Al Shindagha, one of Dubai’s oldest districts, offers a heritage backdrop that organizers say serves as a wellspring of inspiration. Working from within a culturally significant area allows artists to interact with the environment and draw from its layered history, blending traditional context with contemporary practice.

Application Details and Requirements

Dubai Culture is targeting practitioners who are already active in the sector, have an established practice in Dubai, and are registered in compliance with UAE regulations. Applicants must submit a comprehensive portfolio that includes previous projects, exhibitions, and public events, along with experience in delivering workshops, talks, or talent development initiatives.

Each application must outline a proposed project and include a public program with at least two activities—such as open lectures, talks, or exhibitions. Candidates must also demonstrate the operational ability to manage the residency for its full duration, maintain the allocated space, comply with heritage site regulations and Dubai Municipality requirements, obtain necessary permits, and follow approved health and safety standards.

A specialized committee will review submissions based on the quality and feasibility of the concept, the diversity of the public program, its contribution to talent development, and the applicant’s professional track record. All materials should be sent to design@dubaiculture.ae.

A Vision for Heritage and Creativity

Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, framed the residency as a strategic step to expand opportunities for local talent. “The ‘Creative Studio Residency’ initiative is about expanding opportunities for local talent to thrive and contribute to strengthening the creative sector,” she said. “The program supports both emerging and established practitioners, enabling them to advance their work across fields such as design, architecture, and the arts, while building strong professional networks.”

Al Suwaidi emphasized the broader purpose of redefining heritage sites as active production platforms. “Its importance lies in redefining heritage sites as active production platforms where creatives can develop and test their ideas, gauge audience engagement, and ultimately turn them into projects with cultural impact and economic value.”

Broader Impact

The residency aligns with Dubai Culture’s ongoing mission to sustain creative production and reinforce Dubai’s reputation as a global center for culture and talent incubation. By placing artists directly inside a historic neighbourhood, the program encourages a two-way exchange: creatives draw inspiration from the past while injecting new energy into the district. For applicants, the residency offers not just studio space but a chance to contribute to the city’s cultural fabric and build lasting professional networks. Those interested should review full details on Dubai Culture’s website and prepare their submissions before the July 27 deadline.
