Dubai is rapidly expanding its infrastructure and embracing next-generation mobility, highlighted by the imminent launch of aerial taxi services and significant enhancements to its rail and road networks. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, recently reviewed the ambitious progress of these projects, which are central to positioning the emirate as a global leader in urban innovation and liveability.
During a meeting on November 12, 2025, with His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Crown Prince underscored that sustained investment in infrastructure is vital for the emirate’s future, aligning with the strategic goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33. The projects emphasize a forward-looking strategy focused on sustainability, connectivity, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
Aerial Taxi Trials Pave Way for 2026 Passenger Service
A key milestone highlighted during the review was the advanced testing phase of Dubai’s Aerial Taxi project. Operational trials, conducted in collaboration with Joby Aviation Inc., recently achieved a significant success with the first crewed flight of the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
This fully electric, environmentally friendly aerial vehicle successfully completed a test flight between two distinct desert locations—taking off from Margham and landing at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This achievement confirms the aircraft’s high standards for safety, comfort, and speed. Equipped with six propellers and four independent battery packs, the eVTOL boasts a range of 160 kilometers and a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour, accommodating four passengers alongside the pilot.
The successful flight marks a crucial transition from desert testing to preparing for urban operations. With coordination between the RTA, the General Civil Aviation Authority, and the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, passenger services are slated to commence in 2026.
Key Infrastructure Development:
To support the launch, Skyports Infrastructure is developing the first dedicated Vertiport near Dubai International Airport (DXB). This four-level facility spans 3,100 square meters, featuring:
- Two floors dedicated to vehicle parking.
- Two pads for take-off and landing operations.
- Fully air-conditioned passenger facilities to ensure comfort.
Additional vertiports are being planned in coordination with major property developers across the emirate.
Expanding Dubai’s Rail and Road Connectivity
The RTA also presented updates on the expansion of Dubai’s integrated public transit system. The planned Blue Line project, scheduled for completion in 2029, will significantly expand the emirate’s rail capabilities. Upon its opening, the total network length will increase from 101 km to 131 km, adding 30 km to the Dubai Metro and Tram lines. The network will grow from 64 to 78 stations, supported by an expansion of the fleet from 140 to 168 trains.
Furthermore, a comprehensive plan to enhance road and transport network integration includes 72 projects set for completion by the end of 2027. These developments involve building 226 km of new roads, 115 bridges and tunnels, and establishing 11 main travel corridors throughout Dubai.
The Future Loop: Transforming Pedestrian Access
Looking beyond motorized transport, the Crown Prince was briefed on The Future Loop Project, a core component of the Dubai Walk Master Plan designed to foster a pedestrian-friendly city year-round. This initiative aims to increase the share of pedestrian and individual mobility from the current 13% to 25% by 2040.
The centerpiece is the iconic Future Loop bridge. This climate-controlled pathway, spanning 2 kilometers and ranging in width from 6 to 15 meters, is being designed to connect major economic hubs, including the Dubai World Trade Centre, the Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
The pathway’s upper level will offer 30,000 square meters of air-conditioned space for all-season use, complemented by an equal amount of open space incorporating shaded structures and landscaping to mitigate ambient temperatures. In total, the Dubai Walk Master Plan envisions developing 3,300 km of new walkways and rehabilitating 2,300 km of existing routes by 2040, alongside the construction of 110 new pedestrian bridges and tunnels. Through these integrated efforts, Dubai is solidifying its reputation as a smart, resilient, and dynamic global city.
